Curious about Indonesian wayang golek and wayang kulit puppet shows...?
Is this art form popular on Sumatra, or is it restricted to Java and Bali? Would a tourist in Medan see vendors selling these puppets? Do these puppets always represent a standard set of characters and if so, who are the characters? Thanks for any help you can give.
This art would not be popular in Sumatra. Could be some places that people from Java leaves in. But, yeah for buying the puppets you could find store in Medan sells. Tried to ask at the airport gate, if you just arrived you will not see it. Cos, the stores was in the departure waiting gate. But if they were not selling, there are store for gift shop everywhere, just ask the hotel. I have seen one big hotel was selling the puppets in their gift shop.
Wayang kulit, were always showed you a standard sets of characters. But there would be too many to buy. Not just Mahabarata tale, but also the Ramayana. Each tales would gave dozens of characters.
Wayang Golek was rotating in same both tales as Kulit's. But they are now inventing more and more funny character. The one that does not disturb the main story but would gave a distinct appearance to humor and other. For instance, there were this anonymous character who could vomit during the actual show. Or the one that can breath in and out a cigarette. It was very funny.
