I'm making sculptures of birds, crows...what could be used for casting material?
I'm making crows, different positions, etc, to be hung in the air over a larrrge space and on the ground as well, essentially taking over the space. I have plaster molds of these birds that I'm looking to use, what would be cheap (I am an undergrad art major after all) that could be used to cast in that would be lightweight to hang as well? ANY help could quiet easily save my future!
drying time is also a problem, the faster the turn around rate the better, I have to make over 100 birds as fast as I can.
If you try it out you might be able to use paper mache like slip casting with clay. If that doesn't work it should work if you let a layer of paper mache in the mold like you would with fiber glass. So if they are easy (like 2 part molds) you could try also try fiber glass/resin for better stability, but I would think you will have to seal the plaster with shellac or something like that - which means the plaster will not be as good for molds with wet material like clay or plaster.
Of course you could also use plaster, depends how your mold is shaped whether a hollow cast is stable enough of you would need it solid. If you dry out the plaster thoroughly it is actually not that heavy.
Of course your plaster molds are most likely meant to be used for slip casting with clay, so that's another option.
