Stones that can be used in a rock tumbler?
Hi, I'm wondering if there is are specific stones that CAN'T (or shouldn't) be tumbled in a rock tumbler? For example, I have some pieces of rough boulder opal (veins of opal in ironstone) that I would like to tumble, but am worried that the abrasives used in the rock tumbler would harm the patches of opal. Does anyone have any experience with this, or can anyone offer advice? Thanks!
Don't tumble your boulder opal.... you'll end up with nothing.... opal is soft.
agates, jaspers, glass, quartz do very well in tumblers, as does turquoise... just remember not to put rocks of different hardnesses together.... in other words, put only turquoise with turquoise, jaspers, with other jaspers, etc. If you don't, the softer stuff will disintegrate.
polish your boulder opal separately, and be carefullll You could polish away the very opal you are trying to expose.
