Antique brass?? Scratches to shiny white but also very heavy and not magnetic???
Hi,
I have a pair of antique brass/marble electrified candelabra lamps dating 1960 and for which my dad paid a lot and I always thought that it was valuable. I read somewhere to do the scratch test and I was disappointed that it comes out shiny greyish white under the lacquer and continues to stay so. It is very heavy too and does not stick to a magnet. Can you please help make me make sense what metal it is without paying a fortune? Thanks for your help.
In daylight, the scratch looks pale yellow but at night, looks more silvery whitish. Thanks for your responses.
It sounds like some sort of zinc alloy, usually called pot metal, or white metal. That would explain the color, the weight, and the the fact that it won't attract a magnet.
Magnets are attracted only to objects containing iron.
