Why do we value original works of art more highly than their copies?
This may seem like a stupid question, but given our advanced technology we are able to create nearly perfect copies of paintings and sculptures (not to mention books or music). In fact, these copies are often so good that even experts can mistake them for originals. An average Joe is even easier to satisfy with an inferior copy, yet even he thinks that the original is somehow worth more? Why is that?
Myth of the lone genius? How much cultural value we place on 'originality'? (see copyright laws). I don't know if 'originality' is even possible, because everything we are/think comes from things we experience. Derivative works can be as interesting, good, powerful, etc as anything deemed 'original'... and yeah, if art critics can't even tell the difference between a real Picasso and a fake... why does it matter?
Which doesn't mean I want to see more lame Hollywood remakes...I guess by 'originality' I want to see a new way--or new to me-- of looking at something.
