Why do airline safety videos say "Always adjust your own oxygen mask/life vest before helping others"?
It seems that you would want to help others first, such as you child. If you die in an aviation accident, but you saved your child's life, wouldn't that be the best thing? rather than your child dying and you surviving?
Because you can pass out in seconds from lack of oxygen. Even if your child, or whoever you are with, passes out they are still alive and breathing, and will still breathe the o2 even if you put it on them soon after the person passes out.
