what type of finish should i use on a wooden ash tray that will be heat resistant?

I am going to be making several wooden cigar ash trays. I am concerned about what type of wood and/or finish i should use. I want these to last, since they are going to be a gift. So the wood needs to hold up well to heat. And more importantly the finish needs to hold up well also. So, what type of finish will stay intact under a cigar? thanks
